Michael Eliot "Mike" Gordon was born in Sudbury (Massachusetts) in 1965 and is a vocalist and multi instrumentalist (bass, banjo, guitar, and piano) best known as as a founding member and bassist for legendary rock and jam band Phish. He's also had a stellar solo career and over the years, his musical style has spanned many genres such as roots rock (a subgenre of rock music that takes inspiration from various American musical traditions such as country, blues, and folk), Americana (contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, blues, roots rock, R&B, folk, and bluegrass, resulting in a distinctive roots oriented sound), adult alternative pop/rock (a branch of alternative rock - emerging after the genre's absorption into the mainstream – featuring a smooth, melodic, radio friendly style that packages alternative's mellower side for wider consumption), contemporary folk (an umbrella term encompassing a wide variety of genres - emerging in the mid 20th century and onwards - which were associated with traditional folk music), and progressive folk (a genre that uses the introspective, intricate music of post-Dylan folk as a starting point, and adds new layers of musical and lyrical complexity, often incorporating various ethnic influences). He's released 5 solo albums.
